    Hippeastrum Bulbs

Wallabies Dislike The Hippeastrum Plant - A Win for Gardens

Our nursery began over 30 years ago from the passion of Bernie Delaney, lovingly known as Oldboy, had for growing plants since he was a child. While serving in the navy in Nowra, Oldboy grew ornamental flowers near the parade areas and always won the gardening prize. Since then, he has been growing a variety of flowers in Northern Rivers and found the Hippeastrum plant to be the best survivor. This is due to the wallabies not liking their taste, unlike the Gerberas, which they find quite a treat. Some of the other beautiful flowering plants we grow and sell include Clivias, Agapanthus, Epidendrums, Day Lilies, Frangipanis, Liliums, and Hyacinths.

After You Buy Hippeastrum Bulbs, Follow These Planting and Care Guidelines

We provide matured bulbs, that are most likely to be ready to flower in the coming year’s spring. Should you not wish to plant the bulbs straight away, you can keep them in a cool place during winter or place them in the fridge crisper (at approximately five degrees Celsius) to keep them from growing. Never freeze these bulbs.

    • Whether you plant them in the garden or keep them in a pot indoors, they must be in an area that receives full sun with partial shade and little to no wind.
    • If you’re planting more than one bulb in the same area, space them 30 centimetres apart. Cover one-third of the bulb with soil and enrich the soil with a good quality fertiliser. Once the shoots start growing, you can add liquid fertiliser every two to three weeks but be sure to wet the soil well to prevent root burn.
    • Water them sparingly and ensure the soil has good drainage. Overwatering can result in the roots rotting, and the plants will die.

    Caring for Indoor Potted Hippeastrums

To ensure your Hippeastrum flower year after year, the bulbs must be kept in the pot once the flowering is over and allowed to build up their energy reserves for the following year. Continue lightly watering the bulbs even during their dormant stage and keep them in the same place they were in when they flowered.

    • During the flowering stage, ensure the plant receives natural bright light and sun for part of the day this will prevent the stalks from bending towards sources of light, resulting in them falling over.
    • A warm environment with a bit of moisture will awaken a dormant bulb and stimulate shoots to flower.
    • Keeping the warmth constant when the flower buds are about to open and immediately after will keep their flowering period very short. To slow the overall growth and lengthen the life of the blooms once fully open, decrease the temperature of the area that the plant is in.

    • 1 x lucky dip is 1 x random selected bulb
    • Bulbs will be of all different sizes
