    Facts About the Epidendrums Genus

There are over 1000 different species of the Epidendrum Orchid genus, with very noticeable differences. However, they have a few identifiable generic traits, and caring for them is similar across the species. Most of them are epiphytic, meaning they grow on trees with their roots exposed to collect nutrients from the surrounding air and surfaces.

    • Those that grow in the soil also thrive in low-nutrient environments but need coarse, loamy, sandy soil that is well aerated and drains well to prevent the roots from rotting. Epidendrums grow well throughout Australia.
    • Generally, Epidendrum Orchids have leathery and waxy leaves, with the most common flower colours being red, yellow, orange, and white. They can bloom a few times throughout the year, and their flowers usually last a relatively long time.
    • These plants are low maintenance, thrive in a warm climate, and adapt well to a broader range of conditions than other orchid species.

How to Care for Your Crucifix Orchid Plant

The Crucifix Orchid species got its name because most of them have clusters of three-lobed flowers that resemble the religious symbol. These plants thrive in indoor pots in warm, sunny conditions but also grow well outside. When you order Orchids from us, you will receive bare-rooted, mature plants that will flower in a few months. They should be planted in a pot or flower bed as soon as possible, with the roots well buried in the soil.

    • Place orchids in areas that receive full sun and partial shade while sheltered from the wind.
    • Add a good quality liquid fertiliser to the soil, also available for purchase from our online store. Add the fertiliser to the soil when planting and then every two to three weeks but soak the soil with water first to prevent root burn. If you are planting more than one plant in the same area, space them 30 centimetres apart.
    • Once Crucifix Orchids have settled into their environment, it is advisable not to move them as they are highly sensitive to change.

Other Items We Sell to Nurture Your Epidendrum Radicans

Should you see your Orchids struggling to grow, it would be good to test the soil conditions. Our four in one soil tester is fantastic. It measures the levels of sunlight exposure, temperature, soil moisture, and soil pH – the fundamental conditions for growing orchids. We have seed to bloom fertiliser, gardening shears, and We The Wild’s Grow protect, grow, and support range made from 100% certified organic plant food.
