Dual-Head Design

Pick End

The pointed pick concentrates force into a smaller area, helping it penetrate compacted soil, clay and root-filled ground.

It can also be used to loosen small stones and break apart hard clumps of soil before cultivation.

Mattock End

The curved mattock blade is designed for digging, cultivating, shallow trenching and removing weeds.

Its curved shape helps the blade enter the soil efficiently when swung with a controlled action.

How to Use

Loosen the soil using short, controlled movements. Use the pointed pick when working through compacted soil, hard clay or fibrous roots.

Turn the tool around and use the mattock blade to pull loosened soil towards you, remove weeds or create shallow planting areas.

Allow the shape and weight of the tool to perform the work. Avoid excessive force and maintain a clear working area around the tool.

Tool Care

Remove soil and plant material from the stainless steel head after each use.

Wipe the tool dry before storing it. Although stainless steel provides good resistance to rust, prolonged exposure to moisture, fertilisers and corrosive garden products may still cause marking or surface corrosion.

Store the mattock in a dry, sheltered location and keep the ashwood handle protected from continual rain, strong sunlight and excessive moisture.

Occasionally applying a suitable timber oil can help preserve the appearance and condition of the wooden handle. Follow the oil manufacturer’s directions and allow the handle to dry fully before use.

Safety Information

  • Wear suitable gardening gloves and enclosed footwear

  • Wear eye protection when working in rocky or compacted ground

  • Maintain a clear swinging area

  • Keep children, pets and other people away while the tool is being used

  • Inspect the head and handle before each use

  • Do not use the tool if the head is loose or the handle is split

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a pick and a mattock?

The pointed pick is designed to penetrate hard or compacted ground. The broader mattock blade is used for digging, cultivating, shallow trenching and pulling loosened soil towards the user.

Is it suitable for clay soil?

Yes. The pick end is particularly useful for breaking into compacted clay, while the mattock blade can be used to loosen and cultivate the soil afterward.

Can it cut through roots?

It can help break or cut through small and fibrous garden roots. It is not intended for cutting large woody roots, which may require a pruning saw, axe or heavier landscaping tool.

Is it suitable for raised garden beds?

Yes. Its compact 350mm length makes it well suited to raised beds, borders and confined areas where a full-sized mattock would be difficult to control.

Is the stainless steel completely rust proof?

No. Stainless steel is resistant to rust, but moisture, fertilisers and corrosive garden products can still cause staining or surface corrosion. Clean and dry the tool after use.

How should the ashwood handle be maintained?

Keep the handle clean and store it out of the weather. An occasional light application of a suitable timber oil can help protect the wood and maintain its appearance.

Does it include a warranty?

Yes. The tool is supplied with a five-year manufacturer warranty, subject to the supplier’s warranty conditions and appropriate use.
