Product Details

Hyacinths (Hyacinthus) grow from bulbs, each producing around four to six leaves and one to three flower spikes. Hyacinths bloom midway through Spring, bringing welcome colour to the garden. Not only do they bring an array of colours, these also have one of the most perfumed smelling Spring flowers.

These are supplied as dormant bulbs.

Brief History of the Hyacinth

Turkey - Mohamed II, who successfully invaded Constantinople in 1453. Suleiman the Magnificent was in control of the Ottoman empire from 1520-1566. Both of these leaders were devoted to gardens, having Hyacinths, Tulips and many other bulbs cultivated in the cities gardens

Europe - Carolus Clusius (1526-1609) the curator of the botanical gardens in Leiden. This is when the mass cultivation of Hyacinths began. It was through him that the dutch became the commercial bulb growing centre of the world

When and how to plant Hyacinths

Hyacinths should be planted mid to late Autumn. Like other Spring flowering bulbs, anytime after the first frosts is the time to plant these beautiful flowering bulbs.

    • Plant Hyacinths 6 inches deep, in well drained soil
    • Place the bulb in soil with the pointy end facing up
    • After planting, water thoroughly
    • If you are planting a large number of Hyacinths, dig out a larger area and have clumps of 6-9 bulbs per plot.
    • Planting in pots 1 - 3 bulbs

    Watering

Water thoroughly after planting your Hyacinths. Water only during winter if there is not much rain. Allow the ground to dry before watering, as you can overwater. Overwatering can cause your bulbs to rot, which will kill them.

    Fertiliser

When planting your bulbs, throw in some slow release fertiliser pellets into the hole.
Use well draining soil as a mixture.
Apply Grow Micro liquid fertiliser into water and water thoroughly after planting planting

    After Flowering

Once the bulbs have finished flowering, cut off the leaves, so the bulbs can save and gain the energy for next season
