🌼 Planting & Maintenance
Plant tulip bulbs from March to May, depending on your climate. In warmer regions, plant after refrigeration, usually around May.
Choose a well-drained soil enriched with compost. Tulips dislike wet feet, so raised beds or pots are ideal where drainage is poor.
Water well once shoots begin to emerge. A high-nitrogen top dressing can be applied when the first shoots appear. After flowering, remove spent blooms but allow the foliage to die back naturally so the bulb can store energy.
Once the foliage has yellowed, bulbs can be lifted and stored in a cool, dry, ventilated area.
🌡️ Refrigerating Tulips in Warmer Climates
Tulips need a cold period to flower well. In areas without a reliable winter chill, place bulbs in the fridge for 6–8 weeks before planting.
Store bulbs in a paper or ventilated bag and keep them away from ripening fruit and vegetables. Do not freeze bulbs.
Pre-chilled bulbs often grow stronger, taller, and flower more reliably in warmer regions.
🌿 Growing Tulips as Annuals in Warm Climates
In warmer parts of Australia, tulips are often best treated as annuals. Chill the bulbs first, then plant into garden beds or large pots in late autumn.
For pots, use a quality free-draining potting mix and keep containers in a cool, shaded position until shoots reach around 5cm. Then move them into a brighter position for flowering.
