Description

Add something a little different to your garden with Bletilla striata, a beautiful terrestrial orchid commonly known as the Chinese Ground Orchid, Hardy Orchid or Hyacinth Orchid. Unlike many orchids that need specialist growing conditions, Bletilla grows in the ground and can be planted in garden beds, shaded borders, woodland-style gardens or pots.

This elegant perennial forms clumps of pleated, ribbed green leaves with upright flower stems carrying soft pink to mauve orchid-like blooms. The flowers have a delicate, graceful form and bring a lovely spring display to protected garden areas.

Bletilla striata is a wonderful choice for gardeners who love orchids but want something easier to grow outdoors. It works beautifully beneath deciduous trees, along shaded pathways, in cottage-style gardens, or in pots where the flowers can be admired up close.

Supplied as a dormant plant/rhizome, Bletilla striata will shoot when conditions are suitable and can slowly form attractive clumps over time.

Planting & Care

Plant Bletilla striata in a position with part shade, semi-shade or filtered light. Morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal in many Australian gardens, especially in warmer regions.

Choose a protected position with fertile, humus-rich, free-draining soil. Bletilla likes moisture during active growth but does not like sitting in heavy, waterlogged soil.

Plant the rhizome shallowly, around 5–8cm deep, with the growing points facing upward. If planting more than one, space them around 15–20cm apart to allow room for clumping.

Water after planting, then keep the soil lightly moist once active growth begins. Avoid overwatering while the plant is dormant or before strong growth has started.

In pots, use a quality free-draining potting mix with added organic matter. Make sure the pot has good drainage holes and avoid leaving the pot sitting wet for long periods.

Mulch lightly to help retain moisture and protect the rhizomes, especially in colder or drier regions. In frost-prone areas, protect new shoots from late frost.

Feed during active growth with a gentle organic fertiliser or balanced flowering plant fertiliser. Avoid heavy feeding.

After flowering, allow the foliage to remain until it naturally yellows and dies back. The plant may become dormant over winter before reshooting when conditions improve.

Watch for slugs and snails, particularly when new shoots are emerging.
