Planting & Care
Plant Tropicanna® Black Canna Lily in a position with full sun for best foliage colour, strong growth and flowering. Cannas can tolerate warm conditions well and are ideal for creating a lush, tropical look in Australian gardens.
Choose fertile, free-draining soil that holds some moisture without becoming waterlogged. Cannas enjoy regular moisture during active growth, especially through the warmer months, but good drainage is still important.
If planting in the garden, improve the soil with compost or organic matter before planting. For pots, use a quality premium potting mix and choose a large container with drainage holes.
Water regularly during active growth, especially in hot or dry weather. While Cannas are drought tolerant once established, they perform best with consistent moisture through spring, summer and autumn.
Feed during the warmer months with a balanced fertiliser to encourage strong foliage growth and flowering. Regular feeding helps support the large leaves and bright flower production.
Remove spent flowers to keep plants looking tidy and to encourage continued display. Old or damaged foliage can also be trimmed away as needed.
In warm climates, Cannas may remain evergreen or semi-evergreen. In cooler climates, foliage may die back over winter before reshooting when conditions warm again. Mulch around the base of the plant to help protect the root zone and retain soil moisture.
