Hippeastrum ‘Fay’ Amaryllis Bulb | Blush Pink and Coral Flowers - Oldboy&

    Description

Add soft, romantic colour to pots and garden displays with Hippeastrum ‘Fay’, a large-flowered Hippeastrum producing elegant blooms in shades of blush pink, salmon and warm coral.

Each flower features deeper rose-coral veining and a contrasting white starburst extending from the throat. A small green eye completes the beautifully detailed colouring.

The large, trumpet-shaped flowers are carried above the foliage on strong, upright stems and make an impressive seasonal display. They can also be cut for indoor arrangements.

EXAMPLE IMAGE ONLY: The image shows an example of the expected mature flowers. Colour intensity and markings may vary naturally according to climate, lighting, growing conditions and flower maturity. The supplied product is a dormant bulb—not a flowering plant.

    Flower Characteristics

    • Large, single trumpet-shaped flowers
    • Soft blush-pink and salmon-coral colouring
    • Deeper rose-pink to coral veining
    • Contrasting white starburst and throat
    • Small green eye
    • Broad, gently curved petals
    • May produce approximately four to six flowers per stem under suitable conditions
    • Strong upright flower stems
    • Excellent for garden display and cutting

    Supplied as a Dormant Bulb

Supplied as a dormant, flowering-size Hippeastrum ‘Fay’ bulb.

Dormant bulbs may arrive without visible leaves, shoots or active roots. Some bulbs may already have a developing shoot or flower scape when dispatched.

Bulb size, shape, outer colouring and the amount of remaining root growth will vary naturally. Dry, papery or peeling outer layers are normal and help protect the living bulb underneath.

Flowering size refers to the bulb’s maturity. It does not guarantee that the bulb will be flowering or carrying a visible flower spike when supplied.

    Planting Instructions

Plant Hippeastrum ‘Fay’ from winter into spring once local conditions are suitable. July to October is a common planting period across many Australian regions.

Choose a position in full sun to part shade with fertile, free-draining soil.

Plant the bulb with its roots facing downwards and leave the neck and approximately the upper third of the bulb exposed above the soil surface. Do not completely bury the bulb.

Space bulbs approximately 40–60cm apart when planting them throughout a garden bed. Closer spacing may be used for a fuller container display, provided the bulbs have adequate drainage and airflow.

Water lightly after planting to settle the soil. Avoid saturating the ground around a dormant bulb.

    Care Instructions

    Position

Grow Hippeastrum ‘Fay’ in full sun to part shade.

Morning sun followed by protection from intense afternoon heat is particularly suitable in warm and subtropical climates. Too much shade may reduce flowering, while harsh exposed sunlight can scorch the foliage and shorten the life of the flowers.

    Soil and Drainage

Plant in fertile, free-draining soil or a premium-quality potting mix.

Excellent drainage is essential because Hippeastrum bulbs can rot when kept continually wet. Improve heavy soil before planting or grow the bulb in a raised bed or container.

Keep the neck of the bulb above the surrounding soil and mulch. Do not allow water or wet mulch to remain trapped around the crown.

    Watering

Water moderately once leaves or a flower spike begin actively growing.

Allow the upper layer of soil or potting mix to begin drying between applications. Reduce watering while the bulb is dormant or has little active growth.

Container-grown bulbs may require more frequent watering during hot or windy weather. Always allow excess water to drain freely.

    Feeding

Apply a suitable bulb fertiliser or balanced slow-release fertiliser when active growth begins.

Additional liquid fertiliser may be applied at a light rate while the leaves are actively growing. Healthy foliage helps replenish the bulb and supports future flowering.

Avoid placing concentrated fertiliser directly against the bulb or roots.

    Growing in Containers

Hippeastrum ‘Fay’ performs well in pots.

Choose a stable container with drainage holes that is only moderately wider than the bulb. Oversized pots can retain unnecessary moisture around the roots.

Plant with the upper third of the bulb exposed and position the container somewhere receiving bright light. Empty saucers and decorative pots after watering.

    Hot and Humid Climates

In subtropical and humid regions, prioritise excellent drainage and airflow.

Morning sun or bright filtered light with afternoon protection is generally suitable. Avoid planting in low-lying areas where water collects after heavy rain.

Keep mulch clear of the bulb’s neck and avoid watering directly into the crown.

    After Flowering

Remove individual spent flowers promptly unless you intend to produce seed. Preventing seed development allows the plant to direct more energy back into the bulb and offsets.

Once the entire flower stem begins yellowing, cut it near the base without damaging the surrounding leaves.

Retain the foliage while it remains green. Continue watering and feeding during active leaf growth so the bulb can rebuild its energy reserves for the following season.

Do not remove healthy green leaves simply because flowering has finished.

    Dormancy and Winter Care

The foliage may naturally yellow and die back as the bulb enters dormancy. Reduce watering during this period and keep the bulb relatively dry.

In warm, frost-free climates, Hippeastrums may retain some foliage or have a shorter dormancy period.

Protect bulbs from severe frost. In cold districts, container-grown bulbs can be moved into a sheltered position during winter.

    FAQ

What colour are Hippeastrum ‘Fay’ flowers?

The flowers combine soft blush pink and salmon-coral colouring with deeper rose-coral veining. A white starburst extends from the throat around a small green eye.

Is ‘Fay’ a single or double Hippeastrum?

‘Fay’ is a large-flowered single Hippeastrum with broad, trumpet-shaped petals.

    Will the bulb arrive flowering?

No. This product is supplied as a dormant flowering-size bulb. It may arrive without leaves, roots or a visible flower spike.

    When will Hippeastrum ‘Fay’ flower?

It generally flowers from spring into summer. The exact timing depends on climate, planting time, bulb condition and growing conditions.

How deeply should I plant the bulb?

Plant with the roots facing downwards while leaving the neck and approximately the upper third of the bulb visible above the soil.

Can Hippeastrum ‘Fay’ be grown in a pot?

Yes. Use a stable pot with drainage holes and a free-draining potting mix. Avoid using a container that is excessively large for the bulb.

What should I do after flowering?

Remove spent flowers unless you want seeds, but retain the green foliage. Continue watering and feeding during active leaf growth so the bulb can store energy for future flowering.

Is Hippeastrum the same as Amaryllis?

Hippeastrum is commonly sold under the name Amaryllis. Botanically, true Amaryllis belongs to a separate genus, but “Amaryllis” remains a widely recognised common name for Hippeastrum bulbs.
