Planting and Care

Choose a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Plant the tuber approximately 10cm deep with the growing eye facing upwards. Space plants approximately 60cm apart.

Install a sturdy stake at planting time to support the tall stems and large, heavy flowers.

Water sparingly until shoots emerge, as dormant tubers can rot in persistently wet soil. Once active growth begins, water regularly during dry periods without allowing the soil to become waterlogged.

Prepare the soil with well-rotted organic matter and apply a complete fertiliser during active growth. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

Remove spent blooms regularly to encourage continued flowering.

Growing in Pots

Dahlia ‘Earl’ can be grown in a large, stable container filled with premium, well-draining potting mix. Provide strong support for the tall stems. Flowers grown in containers may be smaller than those grown in garden beds.
