Hippeastrum ‘Wild Dance’ Bulb | Red, Pink and White Double Amaryllis

Description

Create a spectacular spring and summer display with Hippeastrum ‘Wild Dance’, an exotic double-flowering cultivar with layers of richly coloured, ruffled petals.

The large blooms combine vibrant red and pink tones with irregular white strokes, highlights and delicate veining. A lighter centre adds depth to the flower, while the unpredictable placement of its markings gives each bloom an energetic, individually painted appearance.

Classified within the Double Galaxy Group, ‘Wild Dance’ produces substantial flowers on strong stems rising above broad green foliage. Its dramatic colouring and full flower form make it an impressive feature in garden beds, decorative pots, courtyards and cut-flower arrangements.

EXAMPLE IMAGE ONLY: The flower image shows an example of the expected mature bloom. The balance, placement and intensity of the red, pink and white colouring will vary naturally between flowers and according to climate, lighting and bloom maturity. The supplied product is a bulb—not a flowering plant.

Supplied as a Bulb

Supplied as the selected quantity of Hippeastrum ‘Wild Dance’ bulbs.

Hippeastrum bulbs naturally vary in size, shape and external appearance. Dry, loose or peeling outer layers are normal and help protect the bulb.

Bulbs may arrive dormant or with developing roots, leaves or flower shoots depending on the season. The presence or absence of visible growth does not determine whether the bulb is healthy.

Flowering performance will depend on bulb maturity, planting time, climate and ongoing care.

Planting Instructions

Plant Hippeastrum ‘Wild Dance’ into fertile, free-draining soil or a premium-quality potting mix.

Position the bulb with the roots facing downwards and the pointed neck facing upwards. Keep the neck and upper shoulders at or slightly above the soil surface, particularly in warm or humid climates.

Do not bury the bulb deeply. Continually damp soil around the neck can increase the risk of bulb rot.

Space bulbs approximately 20–30cm apart when planting in garden beds, allowing room for foliage and future offset development.

Water lightly after planting to settle the soil. Avoid repeated heavy watering until active roots, leaves or flower stems begin growing.

Care Instructions

Position

Grow Hippeastrum ‘Wild Dance’ in full sun to semi-shade.

A position receiving morning sun and protection from intense late-afternoon heat is beneficial in hot Australian climates.

Adequate sunlight supports strong flowering and helps the bulb replenish its stored energy. Plants grown in heavy shade may produce healthy foliage but fewer flowers.

Protect the large double blooms from strong winds and heavy rain where practical.

Soil

Plant in fertile, humus-rich and free-draining soil.

Hippeastrum bulbs are susceptible to rot when grown in dense soil that remains continually wet. Improve heavy clay before planting or grow the bulb in a raised garden bed or container.

In pots, use a premium-quality potting mix that drains freely.

Watering

Water sparingly immediately after planting, particularly if the bulb is dormant.

Increase watering once active growth begins. Water thoroughly, then allow the upper soil surface to begin drying before watering again.

Avoid directing water into the neck of the bulb and never leave container-grown bulbs standing in water.

Reduce watering when foliage naturally yellows or active growth slows. In warm climates, foliage may remain green for much of the year and watering can continue according to rainfall and plant growth.

Feeding

Apply a suitable bulb fertiliser once active leaf growth is established.

Continue feeding periodically during the growing season according to the product directions. Feeding after flowering helps the foliage replenish the bulb’s energy reserves for the following season.

Avoid placing concentrated fertiliser directly against the bulb.

Supporting the Flowers

‘Wild Dance’ produces large, double flowers that may become heavy, particularly after rain.

Grow the bulb in a sheltered position and provide discreet support if the flower stem begins leaning. Container-grown bulbs should be planted in stable pots that will not easily tip over.

After Flowering

Remove individual faded flowers before seed pods begin developing unless seed production is intended.

Once every flower on a stem has finished, cut the flower stem near the base without damaging the surrounding leaves.

Do not remove healthy green foliage. The leaves use sunlight to rebuild the bulb’s stored energy and support future flowering.

Allow the foliage to yellow naturally before removing it.

Growing in Containers

Hippeastrum ‘Wild Dance’ performs well in pots and decorative containers.

Choose a stable container with generous drainage holes. A relatively snug pot is preferable to an excessively large container that holds unnecessary moisture around the bulb.

Leave the bulb’s neck and upper shoulders exposed above the potting mix. Container-grown bulbs require regular watering and feeding during active growth.

Indoor Display

Potted bulbs can be brought indoors temporarily while flowering.

Place the pot in a bright position away from heaters, air conditioners and dark interior areas. Cooler indoor temperatures can help the flowers remain attractive for longer.

Return the plant to a bright outdoor growing position after flowering so its foliage can rebuild the bulb.

Climate

‘Wild Dance’ is suited to cool, temperate, subtropical and tropical climates when provided with appropriate care.

It is frost sensitive. In cold climates, plant after severe frost has passed or grow it in a movable container that can be protected during winter.

In warm-temperate and subtropical climates, bulbs can generally remain in the ground where the soil drains freely.

Dividing Established Clumps

Established bulbs may gradually produce offsets and form clumps.

Divide overcrowded clumps while growth is dormant or slowing. Carefully separate offsets with their roots attached and replant promptly.

Small offsets may require several growing seasons before reaching flowering size.

The flowers combine rich red and pink shades with irregular white strokes, highlights and fine veins. The centre is generally lighter, adding contrast and depth.

Will every flower have identical markings?

No. The placement and balance of the red, pink and white colouring will vary naturally. Some blooms may appear predominantly red, while others may display more obvious white markings.

Is ‘Wild Dance’ a double Hippeastrum?

Yes. ‘Wild Dance’ belongs to the Double Galaxy Group and produces full flowers with multiple layers of broad, ruffled petals.

How large are the flowers?

The blooms may reach approximately 15–20cm across under suitable growing conditions. Final flower size depends on bulb maturity, climate and care.

How tall does ‘Wild Dance’ grow?

Plants generally reach approximately 40–60cm tall. Large double flowers can become heavy, so a protected position or discreet support may be beneficial.

Can ‘Wild Dance’ be grown in a container?

Yes. Use a stable container with drainage holes and a premium, free-draining potting mix. Leave the bulb’s neck and upper shoulders exposed above the mix.

Will the bulb flower during its first season?

Healthy flowering-size bulbs may bloom during their first suitable season. However, flowering depends on bulb maturity, storage conditions, planting time and ongoing care and cannot be guaranteed.
