Description
Create a dense evergreen hedge or privacy screen with Syzygium australe ‘Resilience’, a fast-growing Australian native lilly pilly selected for its compact growth and excellent resistance to lilly pilly psyllid.
Glossy green foliage forms a thick, rounded canopy, while fresh growth emerges in attractive reddish-bronze tones. Fluffy cream-to-white flowers may appear during spring, followed by decorative pink-to-red berries that attract visiting birds.
‘Resilience’ responds exceptionally well to pruning and can be maintained as a formal hedge, informal screen, feature shrub or topiary. Its adaptability, fast growth and naturally dense foliage make it an excellent choice for suburban gardens and larger landscaping projects.
SUPPLIED IN A 50MM POT: This product is a young plant supplied in a 50mm nursery pot. It will be considerably smaller than the mature hedges and plants shown in example photographs. Plants may not be flowering or carrying berries when dispatched.

Hedge Planting
For a continuous hedge, plants may be spaced approximately 80cm to 1m apart, depending on the desired height, density and speed of coverage.
Closer spacing can produce a continuous screen more quickly but increases competition between plants. Wider spacing allows each plant more room to develop naturally.
Regular tip pruning while the plants are young encourages branching close to the ground and helps produce a dense hedge rather than tall, open growth.
Planting Instructions
Plant promptly after delivery into a prepared garden position or a larger container.
Choose a position with full sun to light shade and fertile, free-draining soil. Clear weeds and loosen compacted soil across an area wider than the young root ball.
Dig a hole slightly wider than the root ball and approximately the same depth. Carefully remove the plant from its 50mm nursery pot while minimising disturbance to the young roots.
Position the plant at its existing soil level. Backfill gently, firm the soil lightly and water thoroughly to settle the soil around the roots.
Apply mulch around the planting area to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping the mulch clear of the plant’s stem.
Care Instructions
Position
Grow Syzygium ‘Resilience’ in full sun to light shade.
Full sun generally encourages denser growth and stronger foliage colour. Plants grown in heavier shade may develop a looser habit and require additional pruning to maintain density.
Young plants may benefit from protection against extreme afternoon heat while establishing.
Soil
Plant in fertile, free-draining soil containing organic matter.
‘Resilience’ adapts to sandy, loamy and improved clay soils. Although it tolerates periods of increased moisture, avoid continually waterlogged positions.
When planting into heavy clay, improve drainage across the broader planting area rather than creating a small pocket of heavily amended soil.
For containers, use a quality, free-draining potting mix.
Watering
Water regularly while the young 50mm plant establishes.
Keep the root zone lightly moist without leaving it continually saturated. Deep watering encourages roots to develop into the surrounding soil.
Once established, ‘Resilience’ can tolerate short periods of dry weather, but regular watering during prolonged hot or dry conditions will support denser growth and healthier foliage.
Plants grown in containers require more frequent watering.
Feeding
Apply a controlled-release fertiliser suitable for Australian native plants during spring or active growth, following the product directions.
An additional light application may be beneficial after substantial pruning. Avoid excessive fertiliser, which can produce weak, overly soft growth.
Pruning
Tip prune young plants regularly to encourage low branching and dense foliage.
Established hedges can be trimmed as required throughout the active growing season. Avoid removing excessive foliage during extreme heat, drought or other periods of stress.
For a natural shrub or small-tree form, selectively remove poorly positioned, crossing or damaged branches.
Frequent trimming may reduce flowering and berry production because developing flower buds can be removed with the new growth.
Psyllid Resistance
‘Resilience’ was selected for its strong resistance to lilly pilly psyllid, the insect responsible for producing unsightly pimples and distorted areas on susceptible lilly pilly foliage.
Resistance does not mean complete immunity. Plant health, local pest pressure and growing conditions can still affect the appearance of the foliage.
Frost Protection
Established plants tolerate light frost, but young plants supplied in 50mm pots are more vulnerable.
Protect newly planted stock from severe frost and cold, drying winds until the root system is established.
Hot and Humid Climates
‘Resilience’ is well suited to subtropical and warm-temperate gardens.
In hot and humid conditions, provide good airflow and reliable drainage. Water near the base of the plant where practical and avoid keeping the foliage continually wet.
Growing in Containers
‘Resilience’ can be grown in large containers and responds well to topiary pruning.
Choose a stable container with generous drainage holes and use a quality potting mix. Container-grown plants require regular watering, feeding and pruning and will eventually need repotting or root management.

Important Information
-
The supplied plant is young stock growing in a 50mm nursery pot
-
The 50mm measurement refers to the pot size—not the plant’s height
-
Plants will vary naturally in height, branching and foliage density
-
Plants may be trimmed before dispatch to encourage healthy branching and safer packing
-
The supplied plant may not be flowering or carrying berries
-
Mature size depends on climate, soil, position, pruning and care
-
Regular pruning can maintain the plant considerably below its natural size
-
Psyllid resistance does not mean complete immunity from all pests or diseases
-
Frequent hedge trimming may reduce flowering and berry production
-
Fallen berries may attract wildlife or mark pale paving
-
Only consume fully ripe fruit from correctly identified, untreated plants
-
Wash harvested fruit thoroughly before use
-
Example images show mature plants, flowers and fruit only
-
Wear gloves when handling and wash hands afterwards
Frequently Asked Questions
How is Syzygium ‘Resilience’ supplied?
It is supplied as a young live plant growing in a 50mm nursery pot. It will be considerably smaller than the mature plants and hedges shown in example photographs.
How large does ‘Resilience’ grow?
When left largely unpruned, it generally reaches approximately 4–5m high and 2–3m wide. Regular trimming can maintain it as a considerably smaller hedge.
Is ‘Resilience’ resistant to lilly pilly psyllid?
Yes. ‘Resilience’ was specifically selected for excellent resistance to lilly pilly psyllid. However, no living plant should be considered completely immune to every pest or disease.
How far apart should I plant it for a hedge?
Spacing of approximately 80cm to 1m is suitable for many residential hedges. The ideal spacing will depend on the desired hedge height, available space and how quickly continuous coverage is required.
How quickly does it grow?
‘Resilience’ is considered a fast-growing lilly pilly under suitable conditions. Growth rate will depend on climate, sunlight, soil, watering, nutrition and care.
Can it grow in part shade?
Yes. It can grow in full sun to light shade. Full sun generally produces denser growth, while plants in heavier shade may become more open.
Are the berries edible?
The ripe berries are edible and may be used in jams and preserves. Fruiting varies, and regularly clipped hedges may produce few berries because flower buds are removed during pruning.
Is it suitable for topiary?
Yes. Its dense foliage and strong response to trimming make ‘Resilience’ suitable for topiary, shaped hedges and other formal garden features.
Is it frost tolerant?
Established plants tolerate light frost. Young plants supplied in 50mm pots should be protected from severe frost until established.
Can it be grown in a pot?
Yes. Use a large container with generous drainage holes and a quality potting mix. Regular pruning, watering, feeding and eventual repotting will be required.
