Planting Your Hippeastrum Bulb

Hippeastrums are easy-to-grow bulbs that produce spectacular trumpet-shaped flowers on tall stems.

Plant bulbs into fertile, freely draining soil or potting mix.

Position the bulb with approximately the top one-third of the bulb and neck remaining above soil level. Avoid planting the entire bulb deeply beneath the soil.

When planting several bulbs in the garden, allow approximately 20–30cm between bulbs, depending on the effect you want to achieve.

Position

Grow Hippeastrums in:

• Full sun to part shade
• Bright filtered light in hotter climates
• A protected position where tall flower stems are less likely to be damaged by strong winds
• Freely draining garden beds or pots

In hot Australian climates, some protection from intense afternoon sun can help protect foliage and flowers.

Watering

Water after planting and then keep the soil lightly moist as active growth begins.

Hippeastrums dislike constantly wet soil. Allow excess water to drain freely and avoid overwatering, particularly while bulbs are dormant or not actively growing.

Poor drainage and prolonged wet conditions can cause bulb and root rot.

Feeding

Apply a suitable controlled-release fertiliser during active growth.

Additional liquid fertiliser can be applied during the growing season according to the manufacturer's directions.

Healthy foliage after flowering is important because the leaves help replenish the bulb's energy reserves for future flowering.

After Flowering

Once flowering has finished:

• Remove spent flowers if seed production is not required
• Leave the green flower stem and foliage until they naturally decline
• Continue caring for the leaves while they remain green
• Keep plants adequately watered during active growth
• Feed during the growing season to help rebuild the bulb

Do not cut healthy green leaves off immediately after flowering, as they are helping the bulb store energy for its next flowering cycle.

Growing Hippeastrums in Pots

Hippeastrums grow exceptionally well in containers.

Choose a pot with excellent drainage and use a quality, free-draining potting mix. Avoid excessively large pots that hold unnecessary moisture around the bulb.

Place the pot somewhere that receives plenty of bright light.

During flowering, good natural light helps maintain strong, upright flower stems.

Once flowers open, moving potted Hippeastrums into a slightly cooler, bright position away from extreme heat may help the flowers remain attractive for longer.

Storing Unplanted Bulbs

If you are not ready to plant your bulb immediately, keep it somewhere cool, dry and well ventilated away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.

Do not allow unplanted bulbs to become wet during storage and never freeze Hippeastrum bulbs.

For best results, we recommend planting bulbs once conditions are suitable rather than storing them unnecessarily for extended periods.

• Temperature
• Growing conditions

In the Northern Rivers and other warm Australian climates, Hippeastrums may begin flowering earlier than they do in cooler regions.

Because this is a Lucky Dip product, individual bulbs may naturally flower at different times.

When will my Hippeastrum flower?

Flowering depends on variety, climate, bulb maturity and growing conditions. Established flowering-size bulbs generally flower during their normal seasonal cycle.

Can Hippeastrums grow in pots?

Absolutely. They perform very well in pots provided the container and potting mix drain freely.
