Planting Your Hippeastrum Bulb
Hippeastrums are easy-to-grow bulbs that produce spectacular trumpet-shaped flowers on tall stems.
Plant bulbs into fertile, freely draining soil or potting mix.
Position the bulb with approximately the top one-third of the bulb and neck remaining above soil level. Avoid planting the entire bulb deeply beneath the soil.
When planting several bulbs in the garden, allow approximately 20–30cm between bulbs, depending on the effect you want to achieve.
Position
Grow Hippeastrums in:
- Full sun to part shade
- Bright filtered light in hotter climates
- A protected position where tall flower stems are less likely to be damaged by strong winds
- Freely draining garden beds or pots
In hot Australian climates, some protection from intense afternoon sun can help protect foliage and flowers.
Watering
Water after planting and then keep the soil lightly moist as active growth begins.
Hippeastrums dislike constantly wet soil. Allow excess water to drain freely and avoid overwatering, particularly while bulbs are dormant or not actively growing.
Poor drainage and prolonged wet conditions can cause bulb and root rot.
Feeding
Apply a suitable controlled-release fertiliser during active growth.
Additional liquid fertiliser can be applied during the growing season according to the manufacturer's directions.
Healthy foliage after flowering is important because the leaves help replenish the bulb's energy reserves for future flowering.
After Flowering
Once flowering has finished:
- Remove spent flowers if seed production is not required
- Leave the green flower stem and foliage until they naturally decline
- Continue caring for the leaves while they remain green
- Keep plants adequately watered during active growth
- Feed during the growing season to help rebuild the bulb
Do not cut healthy green leaves off immediately after flowering, as they are helping the bulb store energy for its next flowering cycle.
Growing Hippeastrums in Pots
Hippeastrums grow exceptionally well in containers.
Choose a pot with excellent drainage and use a quality, free-draining potting mix. Avoid excessively large pots that hold unnecessary moisture around the bulb.
Place the pot somewhere that receives plenty of bright light.
During flowering, good natural light helps maintain strong, upright flower stems.
Once flowers open, moving potted Hippeastrums into a slightly cooler, bright position away from extreme heat may help the flowers remain attractive for longer.
Storing Unplanted Bulbs
If you are not ready to plant your bulb immediately, keep it somewhere cool, dry and well ventilated away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.
Do not allow unplanted bulbs to become wet during storage and never freeze Hippeastrum bulbs.
For best results, we recommend planting bulbs once conditions are suitable rather than storing them unnecessarily for extended periods.

Flowering time varies according to:
- Variety
- Climate
- Bulb maturity
- Planting time
- Temperature
- Growing conditions
In the Northern Rivers and other warm Australian climates, Hippeastrums may begin flowering earlier than they do in cooler regions.
Because this is a Lucky Dip product, individual bulbs may naturally flower at different times.

No. Lucky Dip bulbs are randomly selected from available stock.

Will every bulb be a different variety?
Not necessarily. We select bulbs from available stock, so duplicate varieties may occur when purchasing multiple Lucky Dips.
What colour will I receive?
That is part of the surprise. Depending on available stock, your Hippeastrum may produce red, pink, white, orange, green, striped, bicolour or other flower forms and colours.
Are all the bulbs the same size?
No. Bulb sizes will naturally vary between varieties and individual bulbs.
When will my Hippeastrum flower?
Flowering depends on variety, climate, bulb maturity and growing conditions. Established flowering-size bulbs generally flower during their normal seasonal cycle.
Can Hippeastrums grow in pots?
Absolutely. They perform very well in pots provided the container and potting mix drain freely.
Are these Hippeastrums Australian grown?
Yes. Our Hippeastrums are Australian grown in the Northern Rivers of NSW.

It was one bulb and being a lucky dip we will have to wait and see what colour it is when it flowers my granddaughter can't wait 😍
The bulbs came well packed and promptly. I feel lucky to have been able to purchase these bulbs as it’s the end of their season. I read a good tip which suggested prior to planting, put the roots in water to encourage the green tips to come through. The suggestion was for 24 hours. None of mine were that quick and in the end I left them for ten days with the final bulb tip just peaking through. I’ve planted them temporarily in pot plants as painting is happening above the new flower bed. Looking forward to a beautiful flower bed in years to come.
Such lovely healthy looking bulbs! Excellent quality and one is already throwing a flower spike upon unpacking and repotting! I am sure it grew an inch today in sunny Qld!! Thanking you Oldboy for your upcoming flowers x

I was thrilled to receive my bulb. Perfect condition. Can’t wait for it to flower next season. I am going to visit you at Waddell Road when I am well enough. I am having surgery next week. Which will take some time to recover. But rest assured l will get there. Maybe in the new year.

My order was a red hippeastrum and one lucky dip hippe. However I receive a beautiful bulb (I believed that is a hippe bulb) and a stem which looks like a crucifix orchid that I didn't order (and didn't want). I sent out an email regarding to the problem but no replied from them! Very dissapointed, althought I would buy from them in the future with perticular hippe bulbs but would never trust them about lucky dip anymore!

Hello, this is the first time ordering online ever, and having to trust the retailer to be honest and reliable. Your service and post was quick but With that it has left me amused for I heard such lovely posts and I do believe that I do have three healthy bulbs and thank you so much for the forth. I had read that others had received their with leaves and loads of roots, and labels. Not sure if they got a letter/invoice in their box care instructions. I know I did not, I actually had to look at the address on the box to see where it was sent from. So hoping that’s it’s just mine and that it was a extremely busy day. But they are alive and one has leaves starting to appear, will keep you updated. Thank you again, these are magnificent flowers and it all starts with the bulb.

well they arrived ,its a bit early to tell as im going to store them for a few months before planting as its only early may and weather is still fairly warm in Perth. Box they arrived in was damaged but all the bulbs looked ok so have put them in a new box and will place in a cabinet outside under cover and see what happens in September to august after I plant .Planted 3 bulbs last year and they all grew ok but only one flowered. hopefully all 3 will flower this year as well as some of the 10 I just purchased
At this point all I can say is that we received the bulbs and I've planted them. I'm looking forward to seeing flowers this coming Spring.
