Product Details
Bring something unusual and striking to your garden with Greenshades Amaryllis, a unique Hippeastrum Sonatini mix featuring green-toned flowers in a distinctive blend of Sonatini Green Jade and Sonatini Graffiti. This variety mix may include straight green blooms, as well as green flowers with dramatic red veining, creating a fresh and eye-catching display.
Commonly searched for as Amaryllis, these flowering bulbs are botanically Hippeastrums, with Sonatini types known for their naturally smaller bulbs, compact growth and charming smaller blooms. Greenshades is ideal for gardeners wanting something different from the usual red, pink or white Hippeastrums.
Growing to approximately 35cm tall, Greenshades is suitable for both garden beds and pots. The green-toned flowers make a beautiful feature on their own or can be paired with white, red or deep burgundy flowering bulbs for a more dramatic display.
Supplied as dormant bulbs, Greenshades can be planted from July to October. Plant with the bulb neck slightly exposed, keep the soil free draining, and enjoy a distinctive seasonal flower display that can return year after year in suitable conditions.
Pre-Order Note
NOTE: This is a pre-order.
Stock is expected to be ready around the end of July, however this may push into August depending on seasonal conditions and supplier availability.
Image shown is an example picture only. Flower colour, size, form and mix may vary slightly depending on growing conditions and seasonal availability.
If there are any supply issues, we will contact you regarding substitution options.
Any items you do not wish to have substituted will be refunded.
Important Bulb Size Note
Greenshades is a Sonatini Hippeastrum mix and naturally produces smaller bulbs than many large-flowering Hippeastrum varieties.
The bulbs may be closer in size to a daffodil bulb, but this is normal for Sonatini types. Bulbs supplied are selected as flowering-size bulbs with a viable root system.

Planting & Care
Plant Greenshades Amaryllis bulbs from July to October in a position with full sun to partial shade. In warmer climates, morning sun with afternoon shade can help protect the flowers and foliage from harsh heat.
Choose a light, free-draining soil. Before planting, loosen the soil to around 20cm deep and improve drainage if needed. Hippeastrums dislike heavy, wet soil, especially while dormant.
Plant with the fat end and roots facing down, leaving the neck of the bulb slightly exposed above the soil surface. Do not bury the bulb completely. Space bulbs around 10cm apart for a full display, or further apart if you prefer a more open planting.
If growing in pots, use a high-quality, free-draining potting mix and ensure the pot has good drainage holes. Avoid overwatering, as bulbs can rot if left sitting in wet potting mix.
Water after planting, then water regularly during the active growing period, especially once leaves and flower stems begin to develop. Reduce watering as the plant naturally moves towards dormancy.
Feed annually with pelletised chicken manure or a balanced bulb fertiliser to support strong flowering and healthy bulb growth. Keep the bulb well-fed and watered during active growth so it can store energy before winter dormancy.
Hippeastrums prefer temperatures around 15–25°C while actively growing. Protect bulbs from frost, particularly in colder regions or when grown in pots.
Once established in suitable climates, Hippeastrum bulbs often prefer to remain undisturbed for several years. They do not require annual lifting unless they become overcrowded, are exposed to frost, or are growing in poorly drained soil.

FAQ
Is Greenshades an Amaryllis or a Hippeastrum?
Greenshades is botanically a Hippeastrum Sonatini, but these bulbs are commonly searched for and sold as Amaryllis. Both names are often used by gardeners.
What is included in the Greenshades mix?
Greenshades is a green-toned Sonatini Hippeastrum mix that may include Sonatini Green Jade, which has straight green flowers, and Sonatini Graffiti, which has green blooms with red veining.
Are Greenshades bulbs smaller than other Hippeastrum bulbs?
Yes. Sonatini Hippeastrums naturally produce smaller bulbs than many large-flowering Hippeastrum varieties. The bulbs may be closer in size to a daffodil bulb, which is normal for this type.
What colour are Greenshades Amaryllis flowers?
Flowers may be green, or green with red veining, depending on the mix supplied and seasonal availability.
When should I plant Greenshades Amaryllis bulbs?
Plant from July to October, depending on your climate and growing conditions.
How deep should I plant Hippeastrum bulbs?
Plant with the roots and fat end facing down, leaving the neck of the bulb slightly exposed above the soil.
Can Greenshades Amaryllis grow in pots?
Yes. Greenshades is well suited to pots due to its compact Sonatini growth habit. Use a quality, free-draining potting mix and ensure the pot has good drainage.
How far apart should I plant the bulbs?
Space bulbs around 10cm apart for a fuller display, or further apart if you prefer a less dense look.
When will Greenshades Amaryllis flower?
In tropical areas, flowering is commonly around October to November. In subtropical regions, flowering may occur from September to November. In cooler regions, flowering may occur around December to January.
Does Greenshades Amaryllis need full sun?
It grows well in full sun to partial shade. In hotter regions, partial shade or afternoon protection can be beneficial.
Are Greenshades flowers large?
No. Greenshades is a Sonatini type, so the blooms are generally smaller than many giant Hippeastrum varieties.
Should I lift Hippeastrum bulbs every year?
No. In suitable climates, they often prefer to stay in the ground for multiple years. Lift only if required due to frost, overcrowding, drainage issues or relocation.
Are Hippeastrums frost hardy?
They should be protected from frost, especially in colder regions or when grown in pots.
What are they supplied as?
They are supplied as dormant bulbs, ready for planting during the recommended season.
Is this a pre-order?
Yes. This item is a pre-order. Stock is expected around the end of July, but may push into August depending on seasonal conditions and supplier availability.
