Product Details
Add rare colour and delicate detail to your home, patio or garden with Saffron Hippeastrum, an exotic Sonatini variety known for its narrow ivory petals, chartreuse-cream starburst and soft raspberry-flushed edging. With its refined flower form and unusual colouring, Saffron is a beautiful choice for pots, protected garden beds, collections and cut flower arrangements.
Commonly searched for as Amaryllis, these flowering bulbs are botanically Hippeastrums. Hippeastrum ‘Saffron’ belongs to the Sonatini group, producing naturally smaller bulbs and more delicate blooms than many large-flowering Hippeastrum varieties.
Saffron produces elegant, recurved ivory petals with a chartreuse-cream centre and variable pale raspberry edging. The flowers are smaller and daintier, reaching approximately 10cm wide, with compact flower stems around 20–25cm tall. This makes it ideal for pots, compact displays and gardeners wanting something unusual.
Supplied as a dormant bulb, Saffron can be grown in pots or garden beds with good drainage. Plant from July to October in full sun to partial shade, leaving the neck of the bulb slightly exposed above the soil surface.
Pre-Order Note
NOTE: This is a pre-order.
Stock is expected to be ready around the end of July, however this may push into August depending on seasonal conditions and supplier availability.

If there are any supply issues, we will contact you regarding substitution options.
Any items you do not wish to have substituted will be refunded.
Important Bulb Size Note
Saffron is a Sonatini Hippeastrum and naturally produces very small bulbs compared with large-flowering Hippeastrum varieties.
Bulbs may be around 5cm in size. After harvest, the bulb may shrink slightly as it dries, but it will plump up again once planted, hydrated and actively growing. This is normal for the variety and does not mean the bulb is poor quality.

Planting & Care
Plant Saffron Hippeastrum bulbs from July to October in a position with full sun to partial shade. In warmer climates, morning sun with afternoon shade can help protect the flowers and foliage from harsh heat.
Choose a light, free-draining soil. Before planting, loosen the soil to around 20cm deep and improve drainage if needed. Hippeastrums dislike sitting in wet, heavy soil, especially while dormant.
Plant with the fat end and roots facing down, leaving the neck of the bulb slightly exposed above the soil surface. Do not bury the bulb completely.
Space bulbs around 10cm apart for a fuller display, or further apart if you prefer a more open planting.
If growing in pots, use a high-quality, free-draining potting mix and ensure the pot has good drainage holes. Avoid overwatering, particularly in pots, as bulbs can rot if left sitting in wet potting mix.
Water after planting, then water regularly during active growth, allowing the soil or potting mix to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering as the plant naturally moves towards dormancy.
Feed annually with pelletised chicken manure or a balanced bulb fertiliser to support strong flowering and healthy bulb growth. Keep the bulb well-fed and watered during active growth so it can store energy before winter dormancy.
Hippeastrums prefer temperatures around 15–25°C while actively growing. Protect bulbs from frost, especially in colder regions or when grown in pots.
Once established in suitable climates, Sonatini Hippeastrums often prefer to remain undisturbed for several years. They do not need annual lifting unless they are overcrowded, exposed to frost, or growing in poorly drained soil.
