Product Details

Bring warm colour and beautiful flower form to your garden with Hippeastrum ‘Ballerina’, a striking double-flowering Hippeastrum known for its full salmon-coloured blooms and strong upright stems.

Its layered petals create a rich, rounded flower that stands out beautifully in pots, garden beds and fresh arrangements. Growing to approximately 40cm tall, ‘Ballerina’ provides plenty of impact without becoming too tall or difficult to manage.

Also commonly known as Amaryllis, Hippeastrums are long-lived flowering bulbs that can remain undisturbed in the garden for many years when planted in a suitable position with good drainage.

Each bulb is supplied dormant and ready for seasonal planting.

NOTE: This is a pre-order.

Planting & Care

Plant Hippeastrum ‘Ballerina’ in a position with full sun to part shade.

In warmer climates, light afternoon shade can help protect the foliage and flowers from intense heat. In cooler regions, choose a sunny, sheltered position protected from heavy frost.

Use fertile, free-draining soil. Hippeastrum bulbs do not tolerate prolonged waterlogging, so improve heavy soil before planting or choose a raised garden bed or container.

Position the bulb with the broad base and roots facing down. Leave the neck and upper section of the bulb sitting slightly above the soil surface.

Space bulbs approximately 10cm apart for a full display, or plant them further apart to give each bulb more room as it matures and produces offsets.

When growing in pots, use a quality free-draining potting mix and a container with clear drainage holes. Avoid placing gravel at the bottom of the pot, as this can reduce the available growing space and does not improve drainage.

Water after planting, then keep the soil lightly moist while the bulb is actively growing. Allow excess water to drain away and avoid keeping the bulb constantly wet.

Feed during active growth with a balanced bulb fertiliser. An annual application of composted organic matter or pelletised chicken manure can also help support healthy foliage, bulb development and future flowering.

Hippeastrums generally prefer to remain undisturbed. Established bulbs can stay in the same garden position for many years and may gradually multiply by producing offsets.

Planting Time

Plant from approximately July to October, depending on climate and seasonal conditions.

Dormant bulbs can be planted after arrival, provided the soil is free-draining and the position is suitable.

Flowering Time

Flowering time can vary depending on climate, planting time and seasonal conditions.

As a general guide:

  • Tropical regions: October to November
  • Subtropical regions: September to November
  • Cool regions: December to January

Newly planted bulbs may flower at a slightly different time during their first season while becoming established.

Growing in Pots

Hippeastrum ‘Ballerina’ grows beautifully in pots and containers.

Choose a sturdy pot with drainage holes and enough room for the bulb’s root system. Keep the neck and upper section of the bulb above the potting mix.

Place the pot in a sunny or brightly lit position and water when the upper layer of potting mix begins to dry.

Avoid oversized pots that hold excessive moisture around the bulb.

Cut Flower Use

‘Ballerina’ is an excellent cut flower, with its double salmon blooms adding warm colour and fullness to arrangements.

Cut the flower stem when the first bloom is beginning to open and place it immediately into clean water.

Keep the arrangement away from direct sunlight and heat. Leave the foliage attached to the bulb, as the leaves help replenish it for the following flowering season.

Important Note

Hippeastrum bulb size and shape can vary naturally between cultivars.

Dormant bulbs may arrive with trimmed, dry or limited roots. This is normal and does not mean the bulb is unhealthy. Fresh roots and foliage will develop once the bulb is planted and begins active growth.

Pet Safety Note

Hippeastrum bulbs and other plant parts can be harmful if eaten by people or pets.

Keep bulbs away from children, cats, dogs and other animals. Wear gloves when handling if you have sensitive skin and wash your hands afterwards.
