Description
Add compact native colour and attractive foliage to your garden with Better John™ Callistemon, a specially bred form of Callistemon viminalis selected for its dense growth, improved foliage colour and manageable size.
New growth emerges with soft silver tones created by fine hairs on the foliage, gradually maturing to an attractive blue-green. Small red bottlebrush flowers appear from mid to late spring, adding seasonal colour and attracting birds, bees and other beneficial pollinators.
Growing approximately 60cm–1.2m high and 60–90cm wide, Better John™ is well suited to low hedges, borders, native gardens, mass planting and feature positions. Its naturally compact habit makes it a useful alternative to larger bottlebrush varieties.
Plant Size Note
Supplied as a young plant in a 42mm pot.
Plants in 42mm pots are small starter plants and will require growing time before reaching the mature size shown in example images.
Plants may not be flowering when dispatched. Height, branching, foliage colour and seasonal appearance will vary between individual plants.

Planting & Care
Plant Better John™ in full sun to part shade.
Full sun generally encourages denser growth and stronger flowering, although the plant will also tolerate some light shade.
Choose sandy, loamy or other free-draining soil. Avoid permanently waterlogged positions.
Water thoroughly after planting and continue watering as required for approximately 8–13 weeks while the root system establishes. Once established, Better John™ develops good drought tolerance, although occasional deep watering during extended hot or dry weather will help maintain healthy growth.
Apply a layer of chunky mulch around the root zone to help retain moisture, regulate soil temperature and reduce weeds. Keep mulch slightly away from the main stem.
If required, apply a slow-release fertiliser suitable for Australian native plants during spring. Avoid fertilisers containing excessive phosphorus unless specifically labelled as safe for natives.
Better John™ naturally maintains a compact form and requires little pruning. For a natural shrub shape, prune approximately every 3–4 years if needed. For a neat hedge, trim approximately every 2 years or as required.
Flowering Time
Better John™ generally produces small red bottlebrush flowers from mid to late spring.
Flowering time and abundance may vary depending on climate, plant maturity, sunlight and seasonal conditions.
Landscape Uses
Better John™ is suitable for:
- Low hedging
- Garden borders
- Native gardens
- Mass planting
- Specimen planting
- Contrast planting
- Rockeries
- Courtyards
- Commercial landscapes
- Bird and pollinator-friendly gardens
- Low-maintenance garden designs
For mass planting, use approximately 3–5 plants per square metre.
For a linear hedge or border, plant approximately 1.5–2 plants per metre, depending on the desired density.
Growing in Pots
Better John™ can be grown in pots and containers.
Use a quality native plant potting mix and choose a container with clear drainage holes. Move the young plant gradually into larger pots as its root system develops.
Container-grown plants will require more regular watering than plants growing in the ground, particularly during warm or windy weather.
