Blue Tropic Gladioli Bulb – Gladiolus Grandiflorus – Light Blue Summer Blooms

Product Details

Bring cool, elegant colour to your summer garden with Blue Tropic Gladioli, a striking Gladiolus grandiflorus variety featuring graceful spikes of soft light blue blooms. With tall upright stems and refined colouring, Blue Tropic adds a fresh, calming contrast to warmer garden tones and makes a beautiful feature in garden beds, borders and cut flower arrangements.

Gladioli are one of the most popular summer flowering bulbs for Australian gardens, valued for their dramatic height, long-lasting flowers and excellent performance as cut flowers. Blue Tropic Gladiolus provides a tall vertical accent in the garden, with elegant flower spikes that bring colour, structure and seasonal impact.

Growing to approximately 100–200cm tall, these gladioli bulbs are ideal for mass planting, cottage gardens, cutting gardens, mixed bulb displays and large pots or tubs. The light blue tones pair beautifully with white, pink, purple, yellow and deep burgundy flowers, making Blue Tropic a versatile option for both garden planting and floral work.

Flowering during spring in warmer regions and through summer in cooler temperate regions, gladioli can also be planted in succession every 4–6 weeks through the planting season to help create a longer display of colour. Plant in full sun in well-drained soil for best results. Supplied as dormant bulbs, Blue Tropic Gladioli is a rewarding choice for gardeners wanting tall, elegant blooms and excellent vase appeal.

Planting & Care

Plant gladioli bulbs in a sunny, well-drained position. Gladioli perform best in full sun and need free-draining soil to avoid bulb rot.

Choose a fertile garden bed, border or large pot. If planting in containers, use a large pot or tub filled with a premium-quality potting mix. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soil.

Plant bulbs approximately 10–15cm deep, with the pointed end facing upwards. Space bulbs around 10–15cm apart for a fuller display. For a longer flowering season, plant additional bulbs every 4–6 weeks during the growing season.

Water in well after planting, then keep the soil lightly moist while the plants are actively growing. Water more regularly during dry periods, especially as flower spikes begin to form.

Feed during active growth with a complete fertiliser to support strong stems and quality blooms. Avoid overfeeding with high-nitrogen fertilisers, as this can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

Because Blue Tropic Gladioli can grow tall, protection from strong winds is recommended. In exposed areas, stake flower spikes as they develop to help maintain an upright growth habit.

For cut flowers, pick stems when the lower blooms are just beginning to open. Place stems straight into clean water and remove any foliage that would sit below the waterline. The remaining buds can continue to open indoors, making gladioli a long-lasting vase flower.

After flowering, allow the foliage to remain until it naturally yellows. This helps the bulb store energy for future growth. In frost-prone areas, bulbs may be lifted and stored once foliage has died back.
