This is a naturally variable, flecked variety. The amount and placement of burgundy colouring can differ between flowers. Tuber size, shape and the number of visible growing points will also naturally vary.

Planting and Care

Choose a position receiving at least six hours of sunlight each day. In warmer regions, morning sun with some protection from intense afternoon heat can be beneficial.

Plant the tuber approximately 5–10cm deep with the growing eye facing upwards. Allow approximately 60cm between plants for airflow.

Install a sturdy stake at planting time to support the tall stems and large, heavy blooms without disturbing the roots later.

Avoid heavy watering immediately after planting. Once shoots emerge, water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist without allowing it to become waterlogged.

Plant into fertile, humus-rich soil with excellent drainage. Apply a suitable flowering fertiliser during active growth and provide additional potash in early summer to support flower development.

Remove spent blooms regularly or cut flowers for the vase to encourage continued flowering.

Growing in Pots

Dahlia ‘Samoan Prince’ can be grown in a large, stable container filled with premium, well-draining potting mix. Provide strong support for the tall stems. Container-grown flowers may be smaller than those grown in garden beds.
