Product Details

Bring rich, dramatic colour to your garden with Hippeastrum ‘Dynamite’, a striking compact Hippeastrum with deep blood-red to dark crimson flowers.

Its velvety red blooms stand out beautifully against the fresh green foliage, making it an excellent choice for pots, garden beds, borders and cut flower displays. Growing to approximately 35cm tall, ‘Dynamite’ has a compact habit that works particularly well in containers and smaller garden spaces.

Also commonly known as Amaryllis, Hippeastrums are long-lived flowering bulbs that can remain in the garden for many years when planted in a suitable position and cared for correctly.

Each bulb is supplied dormant and ready for seasonal planting.

Planting & Care

Plant Hippeastrum ‘Dynamite’ in a position with full sun to part shade.

In hot climates, light afternoon shade can help protect the foliage and flowers from intense heat. In cooler regions, choose a warm, sunny position protected from heavy frost.

Use fertile, free-draining soil. Heavy or waterlogged ground can cause bulb and root rot, so improve drainage before planting if required.

Position the bulb with the roots and broad base facing down. Leave the neck and upper section of the bulb sitting slightly above the soil surface.

Space bulbs approximately 10cm apart for a full display, or plant them further apart if you want each plant to have more room.

When growing in pots, use a quality free-draining potting mix and a container with clear drainage holes. Avoid placing gravel at the bottom of the pot, as this does not improve drainage and can reduce the amount of growing mix available to the roots.

Water after planting, then keep the soil lightly moist while the bulb is actively growing. Avoid constant wetness, particularly while the bulb is dormant.

Feed during active growth with a balanced bulb fertiliser. An annual application of composted organic matter or pelletised chicken manure can also help support healthy foliage, bulb development and future flowering.

Hippeastrums generally prefer to remain undisturbed. Established bulbs can stay in the same garden position for many years and may gradually multiply by producing offsets.

Planting Time

Plant from approximately July to October, depending on climate and seasonal conditions.

Dormant bulbs can also be planted after arrival, provided the soil is free-draining and the position is suitable.

Flowering Time

Flowering time can vary depending on location, planting time and seasonal conditions.

As a general guide:

  • Tropical regions: October to November
  • Subtropical regions: Around November
  • Cool regions: December to January

Newly planted bulbs may flower at a slightly different time during their first season while becoming established.

Growing in Pots

Hippeastrum ‘Dynamite’ is well suited to container growing due to its compact height.

Choose a sturdy pot with drainage holes and allow enough room around the bulb for root development. Keep the neck of the bulb above the potting mix and avoid using an oversized container that holds excessive moisture.

Place the pot in a sunny or brightly lit position and water when the upper layer of potting mix begins to dry.

Cut Flower Use

‘Dynamite’ makes an excellent cut flower.

Cut the stem when the first bloom is beginning to open. Place it immediately into clean water and keep the arrangement away from direct sunlight and heat.

Avoid removing too much foliage from the plant, as the leaves help replenish the bulb for future flowering.

Important Note

Hippeastrum bulb size and shape can vary naturally between cultivars.

Dormant bulbs may arrive with trimmed, dry or limited roots. This is normal and does not mean the bulb is unhealthy. Fresh roots and foliage will develop once the bulb is planted and actively growing.

Pet Safety Note

Hippeastrum bulbs and other plant parts can be harmful if eaten by people or pets.

Keep bulbs away from children, cats, dogs and other animals. Wear gloves when handling if you have sensitive skin and wash your hands afterwards.
