Plant Details

  • Botanical Name: Hippeastrum ‘Pink Panther’ (commonly known as Amaryllis)

  • Common Name: Pink Panther Amaryllis

  • Family: Amaryllidaceae

  • Plant Type: Bulbous perennial

  • Flower Colour: Hot pink with subtle darker veining

  • Mature Height: Approximately 50–60cm

  • Flowering Period: Late spring to summer

  • Position: Full sun to part shade (protect from harsh afternoon heat)

  • Soil: Rich, highly free-draining soil or premium potting mix

  • Water Needs: Moderate during active growth; strictly dry during dormancy

  • Supply Format: One dormant bulb

Planting Instructions

  • Depth (Crucial): Plant the bulb so that the top one-third of the bulb remains exposed above the soil line. Burying the entire bulb completely will encourage rot and prevent flowering.

  • Spacing: Space bulbs approximately 20–30cm apart in garden beds, or plant one bulb per 20cm pot.

  • Soil/Potting: Choose a premium, highly free-draining potting mix or well-worked garden soil. Poor drainage is fatal to Hippeastrum bulbs.

  • Location: Position in a warm spot with plenty of morning sun and protection from extreme afternoon heat. Ensure the location is sheltered, as strong wind is the primary reason heavy, flowering Hippeastrum plants fall over.

Care Instructions

  • Watering: Water thoroughly at planting, then sparingly until the first green shoot appears. Once in active growth, water regularly. Crucial: Apply water directly to the surrounding soil. Never apply water directly onto the bulb itself or into the neck of the leaves, as this poses a high risk of fatal bulb rot.

  • Feeding: Underfeeding is the primary cause of bloom failure in subsequent years. Once active growth begins, feed regularly. For the best results, apply a quality slow-release fertiliser alongside a handful of pelletised chicken manure.

  • Deadheading & Pruning: Once the flowers fade, cut the spent flower stalk cleanly right down to the base of the plant to prevent the hollow stem from holding water and rotting. Leave the green strap-like foliage intact to absorb sunlight and recharge the bulb for next year's blooms.

  • Dormancy: In late autumn/winter, the foliage will naturally yellow and die back as the plant enters dormancy. Stop watering entirely during this period to allow the bulb to rest.

FAQ

  • When will this item ship? 'Pink Panther' is currently on pre-order and will begin dispatching from September 28.

  • How do you pronounce Hippeastrum? It is pronounced hip-ee-AS-trum.

  • Why did my Hippeastrum not flower this year? Underfeeding is the most common reason for bloom failure. The bulb requires heavy feeding with slow-release fertiliser and pelletised chicken manure during its leafy growth phase to store enough energy to produce next year's flower.

  • How deep should I plant the bulb? Never bury it completely. Always leave the top one-third of the bulb sitting above the soil line.

  • Why is my plant falling over? Strong wind is the main culprit for toppling these top-heavy plants. Ensure they are in a sheltered position, or provide a discreet plant stake as the flower bud develops.

  • Can I water the bulb directly? No. Always direct water to the soil around the base of the plant. Watering directly over the top of the bulb can cause water to pool in the neck, leading to rot.

  • What size will I receive? You will receive a healthy, premium-sized dormant bulb, ready to plant. It will not have leaves or flowers upon arrival.
