Hippeastrum ‘Princess Madeleine’ | Double White and Pink Amaryllis Bulb

Description

Hippeastrum ‘Princess Madeleine’ is an elegant double-flowering Hippeastrum producing full white blooms with soft to rich pink-red markings through the petals. Also commonly searched as an Amaryllis bulb, this Double Galaxy variety is ideal for pots, patio displays, warm garden beds and indoor flowering displays.

The large, layered flowers create a soft romantic look, while the upright stems make ‘Princess Madeleine’ a beautiful seasonal feature for spring and early summer colour.

Supplied as a dormant Hippeastrum bulb.

Plant Size Note

Supplied as a dormant flowering bulb.

Bulbs may arrive with no leaves, no visible roots and no flower stem showing. This is normal for dormant Hippeastrum bulbs.

Bulb size, root development and seasonal appearance may vary. Flowering time, flower size and number of stems will depend on bulb maturity, planting time, temperature and growing conditions.

Features

  • Double white flowers with pink to pink-red markings
  • Large, full, layered blooms
  • Double Galaxy Hippeastrum
  • Upright flowering stems
  • Excellent for pots and containers
  • Suitable for indoor flowering displays
  • Also commonly known as Amaryllis
  • Strong feature bulb for spring and early summer colour

Flower Colour and Form

‘Princess Madeleine’ produces double white flowers with soft pink to richer pink-red markings through the petals.

The amount of pink-red colouring may vary naturally between flowers. Colour intensity can also change with light, temperature, bulb maturity and flower age.

Growth Habit and Mature Size

Hippeastrum ‘Princess Madeleine’ grows from a large bulb and produces upright flower stems followed or accompanied by broad, strap-like green leaves.

Mature Height: Approximately 40–60 cm
Mature Width: Approximately 20–30 cm

Planting and Care

Plant with the neck or top third of the bulb above the soil or potting mix. Do not bury the bulb completely.

Grow in full sun to part shade. In hot Australian climates, morning sun with afternoon protection can help flowers last longer.

Water lightly after planting, then increase watering once active growth begins. Avoid overwatering dormant bulbs.

Preferred Soil

Use well-drained soil or premium potting mix.

Raised beds or pots are recommended where garden soil is heavy, compacted or prone to waterlogging.

Watering

Water moderately during active growth and flowering.

Reduce watering once the leaves naturally yellow and the bulb begins resting. Avoid leaving the bulb sitting in wet soil.

Flowering Season

In Australian gardens, Hippeastrums generally flower from spring into early summer, depending on climate and planting time.

In warmer subtropical climates, flowering may occur earlier. In cooler areas, flowering may be later.

Indoor potted bulbs may flower several weeks after planting if kept warm and actively growing, but flowering by a specific date cannot be guaranteed.

Australian Climate and Hardiness

Hippeastrum ‘Princess Madeleine’ is best suited to:

  • Subtropical gardens
  • Warm-temperate gardens
  • Mild coastal gardens
  • Frost-free areas
  • Pots in cooler climates

Hippeastrum bulbs are frost tender. In cold areas, grow in pots or protect bulbs from frost and excessive winter wet.

They tolerate heat and humidity well when planted in freely draining soil.

Growing in Pots

‘Princess Madeleine’ is excellent for pots.

Choose a pot with drainage holes and use a premium, freely draining potting mix. A slightly snug pot is suitable, as Hippeastrums often flower well when not overpotted.

Keep the neck of the bulb above the potting mix.

Pruning and Fertilising

Remove spent flowers after blooming.

Leave the green foliage in place until it naturally yellows, as the leaves help feed the bulb for future flowering.

Apply a balanced fertiliser or bulb fertiliser during active leaf growth. Avoid heavy feeding while the bulb is dormant.

Pet Safety

Hippeastrum, commonly sold as Amaryllis, is toxic to pets if eaten. The bulb is the highest-risk part of the plant.

Keep bulbs, leaves, flowers and trimmed material away from dogs, cats and other pets that may chew garden plants.
