Rose - Perfume Delight - Pre-order - Oldboy&

Description

Perfume Delight Rose is a strongly fragrant Hybrid Tea Rose producing large, well-formed blooms in rich deep pink with subtle purplish tones. The lighter petal reverses add depth to the flowers, while the powerful sweet, spicy damask fragrance makes this an excellent choice for perfume gardens and cut-flower displays.

This upright, bushy rose produces repeated flowering flushes from spring through autumn. Its long stems and classic high-centred blooms suit rose beds, borders, feature planting and large containers.

Introduced in 1973, Perfume Delight received the All-America Rose Selections award in 1974.

Supplied as a two-year-old, bagged bare-rooted rose.

Plant Size Note

Supplied as a two-year-old, bagged bare-rooted rose without a pot.

The plant will usually arrive dormant or semi-dormant, with pruned canes and little or no foliage. This is normal for bare-root roses.

Although approximately two years old, it is not supplied at its mature garden size. Plant promptly after delivery and keep the roots cool and moist until planting.

  • Large, deep pink Hybrid Tea blooms
  • Strong sweet, spicy damask fragrance
  • High-centred, double flowers
  • Long stems suitable for cutting
  • Upright, bushy growth
  • Repeat flowering from spring through autumn
  • Glossy green foliage
  • Suitable for garden beds and large pots
  • Award-winning rose variety
  • Supplied bagged and bare-rooted

Flower Colour and Fragrance

The flowers are rich deep pink, sometimes developing rose-pink or subtle purplish tones. The reverse of each petal is generally lighter.

Perfume Delight is especially valued for its extremely strong sweet, spicy damask fragrance. Scent strength may vary with temperature, humidity and flower maturity.

The large, double flowers open from pointed buds into high-centred blooms before becoming more cupped as they mature.

Growth Habit and Mature Size

Perfume Delight develops into a vigorous, upright and bushy rose.

Mature Height: Approximately 1.2–1.5 metres, potentially taller in favourable conditions
Mature Width: Approximately 0.9–1.1 metres

Allow enough room around the bush for airflow, pruning and flower cutting.

Planting and Care

Plant in full sun with at least six hours of direct sunlight each day.

Before planting, remove the rose from its bag and soak the roots in clean water for approximately two to four hours. Dig a wide hole and spread the roots naturally without bending them tightly.

Position the graft approximately level with or slightly above the finished soil surface in most mild Australian climates.

Water thoroughly after planting and apply mulch around the root zone, keeping it away from the graft and canes.

Do not place concentrated fertiliser directly against bare roots.

Preferred Soil

Grow in fertile, organic-rich soil that drains freely.

Improve sandy soil with compost to increase moisture retention. Heavy clay may require organic matter and raised planting to improve drainage.

Avoid permanently wet or waterlogged soil.

Watering

Water regularly while the rose establishes. Once established, provide deep watering when the upper soil begins to dry.

Additional watering may be required during hot weather, prolonged dry periods and active flowering.

Water around the root zone rather than frequently wetting the foliage.

Flowering Season

Perfume Delight flowers repeatedly from spring through autumn.

Regular deadheading encourages further flowering. Flower production may slow during extreme heat, drought or cold weather.

A newly planted bare-root rose may flower during its first growing season, but flowering generally improves as the plant establishes.

Australian Climate and Hardiness

Perfume Delight is suitable for:

  • Subtropical climates
  • Warm-temperate climates
  • Cool-temperate climates
  • Mediterranean-style climates
  • Protected coastal gardens
  • Irrigated inland gardens

It performs best in full sun with good airflow and freely draining soil.

Established dormant roses tolerate normal winter frost, although fresh shoots and flowers may be damaged by severe or late frost.

The plant tolerates warm summers with adequate water. Extreme heat may fade the flowers or shorten their display.

In humid subtropical gardens, monitor regularly for black spot, mildew and other fungal diseases.

Growing in Pots

Perfume Delight can be grown in a large container with generous drainage holes.

Use a premium potting mix formulated for roses or flowering shrubs. Container-grown roses require more frequent watering and feeding than roses planted in the ground.

Choose a stable pot positioned in full sun and do not allow it to remain standing in water.

Pruning and Fertilising

Prune during winter in cool and temperate climates. In subtropical areas, prune during the cooler and generally drier part of the year.

Remove dead, damaged, weak, crossing and inward-growing stems. Retain a balanced, open framework to improve airflow.

Deadhead regularly during the flowering season.

Begin feeding after the newly planted rose has produced healthy growth. Apply a rose fertiliser during the active growing season and after major flower flushes, following the product directions.

Pests and Diseases

Perfume Delight may be affected by common rose problems, including:

  • Black spot
  • Powdery mildew
  • Rust
  • Aphids
  • Thrips
  • Spider mites

Full sun, good airflow, clean garden hygiene and watering at soil level help reduce disease pressure.

It should not be described as immune to pests or fungal diseases.

Pet Safety

Roses are generally considered non-toxic to dogs and cats.

However, thorns can cause scratches, puncture wounds and eye injuries. Rose fertilisers, pesticides and fungicides may also be harmful to pets.

Keep animals away from recently treated plants.
