How to Grow Potatoes in the Bag
- Place the empty bag in its final sunny position before filling. A filled 60-litre bag can become very heavy.
- Add approximately 10–15cm of quality vegetable-growing mix to the bottom of the bag.
- Position four to six seed potatoes across the surface with the shoots facing upwards. The final quantity should be adjusted for the size and vigour of the variety being grown.
- Cover the seed potatoes with another 10–15cm of growing mix and water gently.
- As the shoots grow, gradually add more growing mix around the stems while leaving the upper foliage exposed.
- Continue adding growing mix as the plants develop until the bag is nearly full.
- Keep the growing mix evenly moist without allowing it to remain waterlogged.
- Use the access flap to carefully check for developing potatoes or harvest a small number when ready.
- For the main harvest, wait until the foliage yellows and dies back, then empty the bag and collect the potatoes.
Growing times and yields will vary depending on the potato variety, season, climate, nutrition and general care.
Position and Care
Place the bag in a sunny outdoor position receiving at least six hours of direct sunlight each day.
Water regularly, particularly during warm weather, as grow bags can dry more quickly than garden beds. Check the moisture below the surface before watering and ensure excess water can drain freely.
Feed with a fertiliser suitable for potatoes or vegetables, following the product’s directions. Avoid excessive high-nitrogen feeding, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of potato development.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many seed potatoes can I plant in the bag?
The bag is designed to accommodate approximately four to six seed potatoes. Larger or more vigorous varieties may perform better with fewer plants.
How large is the grow bag?
It measures approximately 40cm in diameter and 55cm high.
What is its capacity?
The bag holds approximately 60 litres of growing medium when full.
What is the access flap used for?
The side flap provides easier access to developing potatoes, allowing you to check their progress or carefully harvest some potatoes without emptying the entire bag.
Can I grow vegetables other than potatoes?
Yes. The bag can also be used for carrots, onions, beetroot, garlic, ginger, turmeric and other vegetables that benefit from a deep growing area.
Does it include seed potatoes or potting mix?
No. This listing is for one Ryset Potato Grow Bag only. Seed potatoes, plants, fertiliser and growing medium are sold separately.
Can the bag be reused?
Yes. After harvesting, empty the bag, remove remaining soil and plant material, clean it if required and allow it to dry thoroughly before storage.
Can I move the bag using the handles?
The webbing handles assist with positioning, but a fully filled and watered 60-litre bag can be extremely heavy. Place it in its intended location before filling and avoid attempting to lift it when full.
Does the bag need drainage holes?
The woven construction supports drainage and airflow. Position the bag where excess water can drain away freely.
Can it be used on a balcony or patio?
Yes, provided the surface can support the substantial weight of the filled and watered bag and excess water can drain safely.
Does it need full sun?
Potatoes generally perform best with at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. Protect plants from extreme reflected heat in very hot locations.
When are the potatoes ready to harvest?
Small new potatoes may be checked through the access flap once plants are well developed. The main crop is generally harvested after the foliage yellows and dies back.
