Description
Tequila Sunrise Rose is a bright, repeat-flowering rose producing many-petalled golden-yellow blooms heavily edged and flushed with scarlet red. Pointed red and gold buds open into full, cupped flowers that create a bold display from spring through autumn.
This compact, upright rose has glossy green foliage and good vigour. Its colourful blooms and manageable size make it suitable for rose beds, mixed borders, feature planting, cut flowers and large containers.
The flowers have a mild fragrance and are valued mainly for their vivid colour and showy form.
Supplied as a two-year-old, bagged bare-rooted rose.
Plant Size Note
Supplied without a pot as a two-year-old, bagged bare-rooted rose.
The plant will normally arrive dormant or semi-dormant, with pruned canes and little or no foliage. This is normal for bare-rooted roses.
Although approximately two years old, it is not supplied at its mature garden size and will require time to establish after planting.

Flower Colour and Form
The pointed buds combine scarlet-red and golden-yellow tones before opening into full yellow flowers with broad red petal edges.
The amount of red colouring can vary with sunlight, temperature, flower age and seasonal conditions. Mature blooms may become more heavily flushed with red as they open.
Flowers are large, full and cupped, generally containing around 40 petals.
Growth Habit and Mature Size
Tequila Sunrise forms a compact, upright and bushy plant.
Mature Height: Approximately 75–80 cm
Mature Width: Approximately 60–80 cm
Its smaller size makes it useful near the front or middle of rose beds and for growing in containers.
Planting and Care
Plant in full sun with at least six hours of direct sunlight each day.
Before planting, remove the rose from its bag and soak the roots in clean water for approximately two to four hours.
Plant into fertile, well-drained soil, spreading the roots naturally within a wide planting hole. Position the graft around soil level or slightly above it in most mild Australian climates.
Water thoroughly after planting and apply mulch around the root zone, keeping it clear of the graft and main canes.
Do not place concentrated fertiliser directly against bare roots.
Preferred Soil
Grow in fertile, organic-rich soil that drains freely.
Improve sandy soil with compost to increase moisture retention. Heavy clay may require organic matter and raised planting to improve drainage.
Avoid waterlogged soil.
Watering
Water regularly while the rose establishes.
Once established, provide deep watering when the upper soil begins to dry. More frequent watering may be required during hot weather and prolonged dry periods.
Water around the root zone rather than regularly wetting the flowers and foliage.
Flowering Season
Tequila Sunrise produces repeated flower flushes from spring through autumn.
Regularly removing spent flowers will encourage further growth and flowering.
A newly planted bare-root rose may flower during its first growing season, but the display will generally improve as the plant establishes.
Australian Climate and Hardiness
Tequila Sunrise is suited to subtropical, warm-temperate, cool-temperate and Mediterranean-style Australian climates.
It grows best in full sun with good airflow and reliable moisture.
Established dormant roses tolerate normal winter frost, although fresh shoots and flowers may be damaged by severe or late frost.
It tolerates summer heat with adequate watering. In humid subtropical gardens, provide good airflow and monitor for black spot and other fungal diseases.
Protected coastal gardens are suitable, but avoid direct salt spray and severe ocean winds.
Growing in Pots
Tequila Sunrise is well suited to a large container due to its compact growth.
Use a premium rose potting mix and a pot with generous drainage holes. Container-grown roses require more frequent watering and fertilising than garden-grown plants.
Do not allow the container to remain standing in water.
Pruning and Fertilising
Prune during winter in cool and temperate climates. In subtropical areas, prune during the cooler and generally drier part of the year.
Remove dead, damaged, weak and crossing stems, maintaining an open framework with good airflow.
Deadhead throughout the flowering season.
Begin fertilising after the newly planted rose has produced healthy growth. Apply a rose fertiliser during the active growing season and after major flower flushes, following the product directions.
Pests and Diseases
Tequila Sunrise has good general health and vigour but is not immune to common rose problems.
Monitor for:
- Black spot
- Powdery mildew
- Rust
- Aphids
- Thrips
- Spider mites
Full sun, good airflow, clean garden hygiene and watering at soil level will help reduce disease pressure.
Pet Safety
Roses are generally considered non-toxic to dogs and cats.
However, thorns can cause scratches, puncture wounds and eye injuries. Fertilisers, fungicides and insecticides applied to roses may also be harmful to pets.
Keep animals away from recently treated plants.
